Scotch Tape Doesn't Last
by Alice B. Clagett

Scotch tape doesn’t last, you know –
     not down through the decades.
There’s no using it for tax returns,
                                   that’s for sure.

These boisterous years roll by
like a wide, wet river –
     silent and dark by night,
a little too loud by day, and
                                   endlessly entrancing.

Scotch tape can’t staunch that flow
     or mend the pain
     of years yet unfulfilled
     and love’s lost hours –

Until, at last,
    our hearts
turn away from the tyrant tide –
     once more to glimpse
            that fiery orb
                                     bless the far clouds
                                          with a sweet goodbye.
