Song by the Pacific
by Alice B. Clagett

I would but be
       this endless ocean:
       tireless, to beseech the sandy shore

 But no! I am this rocky beach,
       and the vast ocean dissolves me;
       slowly, so slowly, seeming not to be, I am
              o’ertaken by that liquid state

And no! I am that line upon the sea
       where water just now meets a fiery sunset...
              not rock
              nor sea
              nor air
              nor even light
       but the thin, fine line
       that mitres each to each

 -- a gift of love, December 2001
